Vulcan Civilian

This is a fairly close copy of the vulcan tunic Spock wears at the beiginning of the first Star Trek movie. It is his civilian outfit that he is wearing when he first comes aboard the ship. I think the symbols on the front are supposed to have some meaning for his family, but I have since seen it on all sorts of vulcan garments.

This was my first really serious costuming project. I did not have any major funds to play around with, so this is probably one of the cheaper costumes I have ever made. I think I spent less than $20 for the fabric, which was a basic black dress fabric, and some velvet for the trim.

First I had to get the design down, and I watched the 2 minutes of footage in the film where the costume appears, over and over and over again, in the dark, as it is hard to make out the details. And there are a lot of details, with loose flaps in folds on the back.

Once I knew what I was making, I created some basic shirt patterns, cut the fabric, and started assembling the tunic. The major piece of work ended up being the embroidery in the front, which I did manually with a regular sewing machine.

I have worn this outfit many times over the years, and although now mostly retired, it is an old favorite. The ears are the good old trusty "Large Space Ear" Woochies, available in most good costuming shops. It is a good one size fits all solution if you want elf ears.
