I decided on this costume last minute before Baycon 2003 after seeing an awesome picture of Nightcrawler from the new X2 movie. The tight deadline became a nice challenge, and the costume utilized a lot of different costuming techniques such as lenses, latex applicances, make-up, fangs, sewing, painting, sculpting and so on. The picture itself gave most of the details of the costume, and the remaining (hands, feet and tail mostly) I could pick up from the theatrical trailers available online. Finally the patterns of the facial make-up I could discern from a picture in a special X2 magazine. The clothes were all clothes picked up at the local second hand stores and then modified in various ways. The coat and vest both underwent removal of extra pieces as well as a lot of sand paper. The vest was also dry-brushed with acrylic paint to accomplish the worn faded look, and the coat was colored with leather stain and dripped with clear nail polish to accomplish the shiny spots. The pants were a pair of pyjama bottoms with the pink and orange lines painted on. The hands are a pair of german motorcycle gloves, stained blue, and the nails are made from thick pieces of leather that has been scored, painted and varnished and glued onto the gloves. The feet are made from carved foam attached to a pair of shoes, covered with a blue bathing suit material. Another set of nails are glued onto the feet. The tail is rigid metal wire, dressed in foam and the bathing suit material, and attached to a military belt. This gives it a nice bounce when walking, and also makes it possible to bend it into any shape. The cross is made from sculpey and beads. The facial lines are made of liquid latex applied with a small squirt bottle. The ears are my regular set of foam latex ears, and the eyes are special effects contact lenses. Finally the teeth are special made fangs by Victor. The clever trick to them is that the 4 false teeth cover 6 of my own teeth. |
