This costume is pretty much all make-up, and grew out of wanting to experiment with traditional horror make-up. The make-up consists of a number o latex applicances, most prominently the shattered glass pieces protruding from skin. The "glass" is actually trasparent rubber pieces cut into jagged shapes, but it looks pretty good. I also created some of my own appliances for this one, such as small scratches to compliment the shattered glass, and a bullet hole (applied between the eyes). Thee make-up is just regular Ben Nye, in a rather pale shade, with red and black nuances for the wounds. Also, a little bit of red around the eyes gives a nice effect. The real secret to making it look realistic though, is the blood gel. It is a red gelatin mass, that is melted with heat, and then applied to the wounds, in splatter patterns, or drips, or whatever other approach works for you. The gelatin then solidifies, while still looking wet, so it looks like wet, really slow running blood. It is a lot of fun actually. The instructions state to use a brush, which I tried, but it doesn't look very realistic at all. I found the best approach is to use a small plastic syringe, and apply the blood to the spot where it should originate, and then letting it run from the wound while solidifying. The trick is to keep the temperature right, as if the gelatin is too hot, ir runs too quickly, and if it is too cold, it won't come out of the syringe. |
