Comments:

This is Sunnyvale's 'Muni' golf course - thus, the price break for Sunnyvale residents. This is a quite short course that is very flat, but it makes up for it with some well-placed trees and bunkers which requires some fairly good placement off the tees. Most of the holes are straight, but those that aren't have some severe doglegs. Water also comes into play on 6 holes.

You get both a dogleg and water on the very first hole. You hit straight out off the tee with a pond on your right to a fairway that makes a 90-degree turn to the right toward the green. There's a lot of room to bailout to the left off the tee, but it's uncanny how many balls find their way to the pond.

One of the most interesting holes on the course is #5. On paper, you see it's only 296 yards and is rated the #15 handicap hole, so you figure it's real easy. Well, in reality, the hole resembles a horseshoe. You'll probably just hit a middle-iron off the tee to get to the 'corner' and then as little as a sand wedge to the green, assuming you haven't either overshot or undershot the bend which would probably put you either behind or under trees.

Another good hole is #8. Off the tee, you have to avoid a long pond on your right and must not hit it too far or you'll end up in the pond that guards the front of the green. However, you should try to get as close to the green as you can because it isn't very deep, so you'll want to bring it in high and soft to keep it from going into the bunkers behind the green. Even better, the green slopes from back-to- front.

The last 5 holes all have tree-lined fairways and the green at #16 is guarded by yet another pond. The 18th hole is probably my favorite. It's not very long, but it has fairway bunkers in front of the pond that guards the green, which is tiered and rather big with even more bunkers behind it.

This course can become very tough in the afternoon. It lies across HWY 101 from Moffett Field and the wind can howl at times. If you're (un)lucky enough, you might even have a P-3 Orion fly right over your head while playing - the 10th fairway even has runway marker lights on it.

The course professional is Art Wilson, he of the somewhat well-known golf shop fame here in the Bay Area. The pro shop is basically a mirror of one his retail stores, so you can find just about anything there.

Directions:

From HWY 101, turn onto Mathilda Avenue going South. Turn right onto Maude Avenue and make another right onto Macara Lane. The parking lot is on your left where the road bends.
